History of CTW Corporation

Our founder Bill Cummens worked for years at a Water Well Contractor but after seeing the need for a customer based contracting service, he decided to go all-in and start up his own business in 1972. Bill grew up in Clara City, Minnesota and was childhood friends with the Thein brothers. Thein Well Company who trace their history back to 1893 helped provide initial financial assistance to Bill which is where CTW (Cummens-Theins Wells) Corporation got its name.

Bill started off with just a small pump hoist and a couple pipe wrenches working out of his garage but quickly gained customers through his focus on customer service. Bill’s son, Tim followed in his father’s footsteps graduating from the University of Minnesota- Twin Cities with a degree in civil engineering. He began working for the company in 1977 right out of high school.

Over the next few decades, CTW continued to grow throughout Wisconsin and Illinois. As one of the few well contracting companies with Professional Engineers on staff, CTW differentiated themselves by providing that same customer service with an analytical approach to solving the problems rather than treating the symptoms.

1992

In 1992, CTW purchased Nooyen Well and Pump out of New Franken, WI to expand their presence in the northeast portion of the state. They followed up this purchase with the acquisition of Gillette Well Drilling out of Gillette, WI to further expand north. By 1994, Tim took over for Bill as President of operations as CTW kept growing and servicing new industries.

2005

In 2005 Bill was just the second recipient all time of the prestigious Gold Water Drop Award by the American Water Works Association (AWWA) Wisconsin Chapter commemorating 50 years in the water industry.

2013

In 2013, Bill’s grandson and Tim’s son William Hunter Cummens began working full time after completing his civil engineering degree from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Having gained experience during his youth working in the shop, he now handles the engineering and management side of the business. He was very grateful for the opportunity to learn from his grandfather as Bill passed away in 2015 at the age of 87. Bill was still coming into work every day until the end despite retiring over ten years earlier.

2015

In 2015, CTW purchased Medary Drilling out of Holmen, WI to service the western part of the state and customer base. The two companies complemented each other extremely well with Medary’s expertise in the residential market and CTW’s municipal and commercial experience. However, in 2021 deciding to discontinue the residential market, CTW sold Medary Drilling.

W. Hunter Cummens, PE of CTW Wells and Pumps

2018

Wanting to service Northwestern Wisconsin customers with speed and exceptional customer service Hunter moved to Augusta, WI with his family to open a new fully equipped branch location in Eau Claire, WI. This allows our customers to have an experienced professional in their back yard should an emergency happen. Along with his role as  Branch Manager, Hunter assumed the position of Owner/President as his dad slowly transitions and is part-time out of our Headquarter location.
